Biochar

Proven. Affordable.
Durable carbon removal.

From ancient Amazonian soils to modern climate infrastructure. Biochar locks carbon away for centuries — and on the way there it restores the ground it came from and pays the people who farm it.

The origin story

Terra preta
of the Amazon.

Centuries ago, Indigenous communities in the Amazon enriched poor soils with charred organic matter, creating fertile terra preta that still thrives today. Nobody was counting tonnes of CO₂ — they were trying to grow food on ground that would not cooperate.

That practice is the foundation of modern biochar. What changed is the measurement around it: the same charred carbon, now characterised in a lab, tracked to a registry and priced.

What is biochar?

A carbon-rich material produced by heating biomass — crop residues from agriculture, or wood waste — in a low-oxygen process called pyrolysis. Unlike ordinary charcoal, biochar is made for environmental and agricultural use: it locks carbon into solid form instead of releasing it as CO₂.

Sustainable feedstock sourcing

For true carbon removal the biomass must meet the additionality criteria — the material (palm EFB, rice husks, forestry residues) would otherwise have rotted or been burned, releasing CO₂ and methane.

Our collection process emphasises traceability and ecological balance. We only gather residues that are not required for local soil health, so the surrounding ecosystem stays net-positive rather than quietly stripped to feed a kiln.

The global market

Asia-Pacific is where
the supply has to come from.

Biochar has become the backbone of the carbon removal industry, bought at scale by Google and Microsoft among others. Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region — abundant agricultural residues, expanding pyrolysis capacity — and Reclimate is building the projects to meet it.

Beyond carbon

Every project is designed to
deliver more than a tonne.

01

Pollution reduction

Biochar cuts methane and NO₂, and locks carbon away for hundreds to thousands of years — directly slowing climate change.

02

Poverty alleviation

A new way for farmers to earn, through better harvests and access to carbon credit markets.

03

Soil restoration

Degraded soil recovers fertility and holds up against drought and erosion.

04

Food security

Healthier soil means better yields, even on land that used to struggle to grow much.
